This icon of the Annunciation was done for a friend and mentor, the Rev. Diane Rhodes, Priest -in-Charge of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Harrington Park. Copied from a late 14th century icon of the Rostov-Suzdal School, the original icon had apparently become covered with the residue of incense and candle wax and was cleaned some time before modern methods of cleaning and restoration were known. Consequently, layers of paint were removed in the process including most of the highlighting.
I chose this icon to copy because of its simplicity and the very direct rendering of inverse perspective (what you see gets larger the further back it is). The figures of the angel and Mary, stripped of their highighting, seemed to fit with the simplicity of the overall image, so I kept highlighting to a minimum.
